World War II Veteran Aviators Edna Modisette Davis and Alyce Stevens Rohrer will be featured at a special event in Los Angeles, celebrating the history of female pilots in the U.S. Armed Services. The Greatest Generation will be joined by the Next Generation - recent female veterans of the U.S. Air Force - to discuss the rich history of female aviators in the U.S. military and what the future holds for women in the military.

The panel will cover topics such as the ground-breaking ruling to allow women in combat in all areas of the Armed Services to the controversial ruling denying women WWII Veterans the right to be buried in Arlington Cemetery.

The event is meant to be the first in a series of events we will produce around the country to raise awareness for FlyGirls, and our female aviators of all generations. It is our hope for the WASP who remain with us to know they will not be forgotten.

Says Edna Davis, “I’m absolutely thrilled about this project. I hope all the generations to come will know the magnificent story of the WASP. It’s about time!” Mrs. Davis’ specialty was flying the B-26 Martin Marauder.

Feel free to forward to friends and family, and thank you again for your continued support!

    Best,

    Happy 2016!

    Dear FlyGirls Supporters,

    Boston shows FlyGirls Love!

FlyGirls & Matia Karrell got a lot of love from Boston in the past two days. The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald published pieces on our event this coming Sunday, January 10th. See the links below:

    http://www.bostonglobe.com/lifestyle/names/2016/01/05/roslindale-native-working-miniseries-about-women-aviators-during-wwii/iQiAJ06ZKP9a48xXRpR5AO/story.html?event=event25

You all should have received an event invitation, and if you are unable to attend in person, we will email you the link for live-streaming, as well as a recording of it afterwards. Please share with your friends and family, as all donors who give by Jan 9th will receive this.

Thank you for your continued support! As we go into our home-stretch leg of our campaign, we are almost half-way funded with 278 contributors! Now that we're past the holidays, and with an article due out in the Huffington Post, we are going full-speed ahead to reach our goal.

    Gratefully yours,

    The FlyGirls Team

    Recent Press

FlyGirls was recently featured in TheToolBox.org, with a great article about the project by Madison Salters, and the article has gotten great traction across the internet.

You can read it here: FlyGirls Press

    Special Event

We are planning a Champagne Brunch, hosted at our Associate Producer, Ellie Shapiro's home in Malibu on January 10th. This event will serve as both a fundraiser for FlyGirls and a celebration of women in aviation, then and now. Our special guests will include WASP Edna Davis and Alyce Rohrer, as well as two recent female Air Force and Navy Pilots. We will have a Q & A with these wonderful women, and we will also discuss the recent changes in the policies of the U.S. Armed Services surrounding women in combat.

Please share with your family and friends and as always,

    Many, many thanks,

    The FlyGirls Team

    Dear FlyGirls Contributors,

The FlyGirls team is thrilled to announce that we have 193 contributors and counting! We are 35% funded, which legitimizes our campaign in the eyes of the crowdfunding world, and we are so grateful for your support!

If you have friends who would like to contribute but would prefer to mail a check, please have them make checks payable to

Fund Dreamer Note FlyGirls and send to: 2794 Hume Rd Malibu, CA. 90265

Due to the fact that we have several press pieces coming out about the project, and more and more inquiries from press every day, we are going to extend the campaign from a 30 day campaign, to a 90 day campaign. This will help us take full advantage of the momentum we are building with the press and also through social media. At the moment we have almost 5500 fans on Facebook, and our posts often have a reach in the thousands, some times the tens of thousands.

In light of that, we are excited to announce the launch of our blog on our website:http://www.flygirlstheseries.com/blog/ where we are collecting our Facebook posts, and adding additional content to the posts if we shortened them for Facebook. We will also be launching our e-newsletter in the next few days, so we can keep you up to date on our progress and give you the "inside scoop" on our developments as you are a part of our team!

We are still reeling from the recent attacks, and would like to acknowledge the victims and their families of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and around the world.

    Best wishes,

    Everyone at FlyGirls

  • Matia Karrell / Hilary Prentice November 13, 2015

    Dear FlyGirls Patrons,

Our campaign has over 180 contributors and counting! We cannot do this without your generous support so thank you for contributing and spreading the word!

Veterans Day was a busy day for us. We gave three interviews, one to Bee Haydu's local paper in West Palm Beach Florida, one to an online publication in the UK, www.thetoolbox.org, and we did a podcast interview with the editor of WombatSports.com on the podcast "SomewhereinVegas".

This weekend, we are going to feature some of our special, one-of-a-kind WASP memorabilia that Creator/Director Matia Karrell has collected over the years.

In addition to our regular rewards, we are offering a signed copy of Bee Haydu's book, Letters Home: 1944-1945 or a FlyGirl's t-shirt.

We also have a blue WASP scarf, like the one our friend Edna Davis wears, that we can offer to the first person who donates $250.00. As far as we know, they are not making these scarves any more. Edna told us that she got hers from a fellow WASP, who decided to have them made and sold them to other WASP before they had an official WASP uniform.

We also have one last program from the 2010 Gold Medal Ceremony, which roughly 320 WASP attended and received the Honor from President Obama.

Finally, we have something very special and truly one-of-a-kind. At a gathering of WASP years ago, Matia had many of them sign her book On Silver Wings by Marianne Verges. There are many wonderful photos in the book, and Matia had the women sign next to their pictures, or elsewhere in the book. As many of these women are no longer with us, this book is a treasure, and we think will be a collector's item. "Verges gives us the pride, emotion, and struggle of America's first deployment of women aviators." --Brig. Gen. Wilma L. Vaught USAF (Retired)

We will give this to the first person who donates $2500.

Please share with your friends and family, and from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

    The FlyGirls team.

70 Years After WWII, Remembering America’s Forgotten Flyers

Oscar-nominated Director Developing Miniseries Highlighting America’s First Female Pilots in WWII

Los Angeles October 30, 2015 World War II aviator Elizabeth “Betty Wall” Strofus, will live on in an unprecedented dramatic television miniseries about the first American women pilots to fly for the Armed Services.

FlyGirls is a ten part miniseries in development by Karrell’s production company, The Red Door Films, about the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and the barriers these courageous women broke while serving their country.

“I made a promise to my dear friend Violet Cowden, (WASP Class 43-W-4, 1916-2011), that I would do whatever it takes to tell their story,” says creator and director Matia Karrell.

Karrell, has been researching the WASP for over 20 years. “In 2009, 300 WASP received the Gold Medal from President Obama. Today, less than half of these women are alive. It is crucial that we make this series now for the women that remain with us, so they know they will not be forgotten.”

This miniseries could not be more timely. Women in the film industry are clamoring for equal opportunity for women’s roles, both in front of and behind the camera. “FlyGirls will speak to all generations, and it’s particularly important to show the younger generations images of women pilots of WWII, with their strength, confidence, and determination”, says Kyleanne Hunter, of Think Broader, and also a former Marine light attack helicopter pilot.

"We worked so hard for our country, and they forgot about us for 35 years … that's why this production, FlyGirls is so important," says Betty Stofus, one of the first WASP classes whose been telling her story as a WASP across the country for the past 25 years. Strofus and some of her fellow “veterans” were largely responsible for the 1977 bill that finally gave them their official veteran's status after over 35 years of not being recognized.

FlyGirls will be directed by Karrell, a Fulbright Fellow, who directed and co-wrote the 1989 Academy Award Nominated live action short film, Cadillac Dreams.

The Miniseries is based on Byrd Howell Granger’s book, On Final Approach, and the unpublished diaries of Ann Wood-Kelly, one of 24 American women recruited to fly for the British Air Transport Auxiliary before the U.S. entered the War.

Karrell has assembled a team for FlyGirls that includes Oscar-Winning Cinematographer Robert Elswit, award-winning producer Hilary Prentice and several veterans that serve in roles ranging from marketing to consultants to put this project to the screen.
