Washington is home to a highly skilled talent pool.

Washington's entrepreneurs claim a strong talent pool that attracts employees. Many attribute the wealth of talent and highly demanded skills in the region to local universities and the high turnover among big companies in the state. When experienced employees leave large corporations to launch their own business or work in a more intimate setting, entrepreneurs benefit of the expertise that is emerging from the business world.

"Training and networking offer huge opportunities [in Washington]," said Joan Koas Woodward, president of small business advocacy group The Travelers Institute and executive vice president of public policy at Travelers. "The workforce pool is very strong and highly proficient. Silicon Valley has the opposite issue. They have to take employees from one another."

Puri stated that local talent is what makes the state a hub for startups. He believes that highly skilled employees are critical to a startup's success. Washington entrepreneurs have plenty of opportunities to form an inclusive team.

Washington is also home to one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation, although it remains at a healthy 4.1 percent. This means that while Washington's labor market may be highly competitive, it is also more likely to hire top talent for available positions as compared to other states. The unemployment rate is not as high as historical norms. Due to the high concentration of large corporations in the state, smaller businesses may still have a difficult time to find the employees they need.
